Pantaleone's descendants lived mainly on Chios (although some settled in Istanbul) for two and a half centuries. Iin 1822 Chios became involved in the Greek War of Independence at which time the vast majority of the island's population (including members of the d'Andria family) was massacred by the Turks.
After the massacres some members of the family came to England, others to Gallipoli (where their services to the French during the Crimean War led to the gaining of French nationality). Most however moved to the nearby Turkish city of Izmir (Smyrna). In 1922 the family was again overtaken by tragedy as Izmir (like Chios exactly a century earlier) was seized by Greeks and retaken by Turkey with, again, a terrible massacre of its civilian population.
Several members of the d'Andria family are involved in tracing a genealogical history of the Descendants of Pantlaeone d'Andria with a view to publishing a book telling their story.
